JUNE 2017 NEWSLETTER
Dear All
Summer is finally here and the summer jumps season is in full flow. We don’t have many to run during the summer although we have started off strongly with a few decent winners. Dandy Dan and Rhaegar gave us winners in bumpers on their racecourse debuts.. their wins bode well for their futures over hurdles later in the season. It was also firsts for new owners to the yard in Phil Andrews and Grahame and Diana Whateley. Phil is a first time full owner who was amazed to have his first runner in his colours winning. Surely not?. On the other hand Grahame and Diana Whateley are well known in the jump racing world with wonderful horses like Menorah, Captain Chris and many others. Good to have a winner for them too.
Elizabeth Kellar has been involved with us for many years and she looks to have a decent horse in Mon Palois while Robin The Raven gave John Webber and Richard Sheppard their first win as a partnership.. Yes all good fun and plenty to look forward to.
Most of my horses are now out at grass enjoying their summer holidays. July will come around all too soon and then their holidays will be over and the yard will start to fill up again.. relief for the trainers pocket if not for the horses’ owners.
Have a good month and I will be back in touch in July
MAY UPDATE
We have started our winners tally for the 2017/2018 jumps season. Mon Palois was impressive when winning at Fflos Las for his very happy owner Elizabeth Kellar.
Mon Palois jumped well and was ably ridden by David Bass who gave him plenty of time to settle and learn his job..
We were delighted for Elizabeth Kellar as she deserved a change of luck with her horses and her Mon Palois looks a horse to follow as he will be better over 3 miles and will eventually jump fences.
Bought by Bloodstock agent Aiden Murphy after his points win he has now won two of his three races for us.
Richard Sheppard and John Webber who own Robin The Raven had taken a box for the day at Ludlow and were hoping that their horse would justify the extra cost…
Nerves jangling and play acting in the paddock were soon forgotten when the tapes went up and frankly they had nothing to worry about as Robin The Raven won easily..
Relief and delight.. Happy owners and happy trainer..
The very next race was the bumper and I had never met Phil Andrews who had bought and named Dandy Dan about 2 months ago; mind you Phil had not even met his horse..
Peter Kerr and I stood in the paddock waiting to meet up but it looked like a no show.. phone calls made and Phil was found standing outside the paddock watching ..
Much encouragement from Peter, resulted in Phil coming into the paddock to meet me and his jockey David Bass and to see his horse.
Dandy Dan was a bugger to break and has always showed great spirit.. yes tough.. Dandy Dan misbehaved on the way to the start with a show of bucking and greenness which was slightly in character but David Bass soon had him under control.
The plan was to be handy, but as so often is the case in these bumpers there was no pace, so David opted to go off in front. Dandy Man started and stayed in front all the way through the race, although he was looking for company and was not at all sure what he was meant to be doing, but he stuck on and won well.. yes a nice horse who will only improve for the experience.
Rhaegar is a huge chasing sort who wanted every bit of rain that arrived. We love this horse and he showed why when winning impressively.
Hats off to Grahame and Diana Whateley as this horse has been around here for the best part of two seasons. Patience is a virtue and yesterday their patience was rewarded.
Rhaegar has now gone home for the summer with Annabel Murphy, whose husband Aiden bought him as a 3 year old.
I do hope you have enjoyed catching up on our news; don't forget we would love to have you involved in the yard if you are not already; we are just a phone call away.
All the best
EXCITING NEW RECRUITS
Kim has been busy at the sales over the last week and has added some exciting new prospects to the yard which are for sale.
COMMODORE BARRY - 4 yr old Brown Gelding
BY: Presenting OUT OF: Specifiedrisk
This fine imposing son of Presenting has had two runs in Irish Point to points finishing fourth and second in what looked like the most competitive races run all season. The horse that won his first race subsequently sold for £250,000 at the Tattersalls Cheltenham sale in April. This horse will either start off in bumpers or will go straight hurdling.
UN NAMED - 3 Year Old Chesnut Gelding
BY: Schaparelli OUT OF: La Marette
He is a fine big gelding who has been broken and ridden away and will run in bumpers in the autumn. He is a horse that has plenty of size and scope to jump fences later on in his career. He has a good strong pedigree full of winners which he'll add to.
POND ROAD - 3 Year Old Chesnut Gelding
BY: No Risk At All OUT OF: Califea
A stunning three year old by No Risk at All (the new hot stallion in France). He comes from a prolific winning family and is currently being broken in. He looks the type to run in a three year old bumper and is definitely worth coming to see.
