NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER 2017
Dear All
I have just watched the Melbourne Cup and it was a joy to watch the Irish fill the first three places. Is this the start of a difficult summer for the Aussies? Lets hope the English cricket team can fill the same three spots in their Ashes test series.
Joking aside we always enjoy giving the Aussies a good bashing.
On the home front we have had a good month with winners hitting the boards. Always good news especially after we made a discussion to change our horse feeding regime. For many years we have fed Vixen Horse feeds but they packed up 18 months ago and although we used another feed last season we were keen to try others. The summer gave us that time and option so a month ago we moved the entire yard onto Dodson and Horrell. It is always a big decision but we felt happy to do so. Others including Paul Nicholls have done the same.
The track has now been completed across the fields to the new sand round gallop; so at last things are all coming together here at Thorndale. Two good gallops and a refurbished schooling ground means that we are ready for the winter months ahead.
OCTOBER REVIEW
October saw the start of jump racing proper and things have got busier here at Thorndale Farm runner wise. Mon Palois gave us a first winner of October at Worcester. Mon Palaois won impressively by 20 odd lengths.. Sounds good.. it was good, but there were only two runners as all the other 5 all came out of the race due to the fast ground.
Mon Palois jumped for fun and looked to enjoy his race which is more than be said for those involved with the horse watching. 6/1 on his odds were and that was probably the shortest priced horse to run at Worcester for many a year.
Mon Palois was bought privately by Aiden Murphy for Elizabeth Kellar after he won his Irish point to point. Aiden described him as a fun horse and that he certainly is. Mon Palois has now won 3 out of 4 so far. Delighted for Elizabeth Kellar who just loves her horses. Sadly husband, Paul, was on jury service so was unable to attend - betting shop for him.
El Presente really has not shown much at home and even at one stage last season we entered him into the sales as he was not showing any ability at home. Luckily racecourses can bring out the best in some horses and this son of Presenting is one.
You should never move a horse on until he or she has had at least one run as they can prove you so wrong. Well here is a good case in mind as El Presente finished third in his bumper before his summer break, making sure we ripped up his sales entry.
Yesterday we thought the track would be too tight and David Bass his jockey asked my reasoning for running. Plans for some of his owners to see him run was good enough. Anyway El Presente jumped for fun (thanks to early schooling from Lucy Jackson) and won like a really promising horse for his owners Francis Brooke, Richard Pilkington, Mark Davies and Charles Yarborough.
Cresswell Legend's owner Virginia Johnson was on hand to see her new horse win, as was her husband David.
Pressure on as Kim persuaded Virginia to buy Cresswell Legend about three weeks ago in the belief that he would win first time out.. That was the easy part, actually achieving it was always going to be harder. The good news is that Cresswell Legend made all and really never looked in doubt having put an exemplary round of jumping in.
Red River was hugely impressive when winning at Wincanton.
Aiden Murphy and Kim saw Red River at the Tattersalls Cheltenham April Sales and loved him. Bernadette Murphy, who I had bought Another Venture off last year promised that Red River would be better.. So far she is right.
A good and impressive win in what looked a decent novice hurdle race. Happy owners.. The Red River Syndicate. Sally Grant, John and Laura Garrett, Brian Cognet, Chris Trigg and Caroline Swire.
I do hope you have enjoyed catching up on our news; don't forget we would love to have you involved in the yard if you are not already; we are just a phone call away.
CHELTENHAM NOVEMBER MEETING
17TH – 19TH NOVEMBER 2017
The November meeting commences with Countryside Day, a tradition dating back over two decades where money is raised for the Countryside Alliance and Injured Jockeys Fund. There will be pre-racing activities in the paddock to raise awareness of these important organisations as well as a silent auction for race goers to support.
Countryside Day Order of Running
1030 – Gates Opening
1215 - Basset Hounds on the members’ lawn
After the second race – Hunt parade on the course
BetVictor Gold Cup Day has seven top quality races and is one of the most popular days at Cheltenham outside of The Festival.
Winner of the feature race, Taquin Du Seuil, has been a regular visitor to his local course, having won the 2014 JLT Novices’ Chase, but he had mustered only a solitary success prior to his appearance in this first serious prize of the jumps season proper.
The meeting always provides glimpses of future stars and it was no different in the latest renewal of the Sky Bet Supreme Trial Novices’ Hurdle. In a tactical battle between two previous winners of the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at The Festival it was the David Pipe-trained Moon Racer who impressed most ahead of Ballyandy.
