Kim has trained over 1500 winners in his extraordinary career and has been lucky enough to win The Grand National with the record-breaking Mr Frisk, The Cheltenham Gold Cup with Master Oats and the Champion Hurdle with Alderbrook. A very rare feat that only one other current trainer in the UK has achieved.
As a Trainer, Kim has won nearly every big race that has been run under National Hunt rules including multiple winners at the Cheltenham Festival. He comes from a background steeped in jump racing, a people person, where time spent in his company is never dull. His passion for the sport shines through and owners hang on to every word of his memorable and amusing stories of his illustrious career. As Kim says he has been privileged to train so many talented horses for some wonderful people.
Mat Nicholls has been Kim’s assistant for the last 16 years. Born in Nottingham from a non-horsey background he graduated into racing by joining their near now neighbour Nigel Twiston Davies, as a yard person. From there he learnt to ride and became a key figure in the Grange Hill Farm team.. 6 years later he moved up the ladder and joined another local trainer in Tom George as his Head Lad, a position he held for a further 6 years.
When Carl Llewelyn gave up riding and started training in Lambourn, Carl asked Mat to join him as his right-hand man. It was during this time that Kim met Mat through his great friend Jason Maguire, who just happened to be Kim’s jockey..fate? Kim’s lasting words to Mat were .. I am not sure you will enjoy Lambourn as you have been in the Cotswolds too long.. When you realise that just give me a ring.. Well, you guessed it, a year later Mat joined Kim and as they say the rest is history and now with this exciting partnership history is going to be made again.
Why not join us on this exciting venture as an owner and be part of a great Thorndale team.
