2nd May 2020

It was plus 4 and dry first thing this morning.

Yesterday morning was certainly a busy one..We moved and turned out 46 horses .. all down to Owdswell Manor in Andoversford.

Watching them gallop around the field with excitement might have been fun for everybody, bar the trainer, who had to close his eyes when they galloped flat out towards a post and rail fence.. Thankfully they all then jammed on the brakes to stop in time.. It is never easy watching, especially on greasy ground during another heavy April show in May.

Racing, like so many businesses, especially in the entertainment world are closed..

Financially this is a shocking time of year, and especially this time, we have already had a month of only 2 horses in training and the possibility of another two, if they don’t hurry up and set a confirmed date for the jump racing season to start..it could spell disaster for many in my ranks..Normally we would have about 25 horses in for May and June before the horses return from their holidays in July..

But it is also a time of year I love, as to walk round the fields every day checking them is a delight.. well most days... seeing all the horses enjoying their summer holidays makes me smile.. but let me tell you they are safer in a stable!!

One of us will go down to see how they are everyday.. in fact we check them three times a day..

May bank holiday.. Well I thought it was, but as I really don’t know which day of the week I am on..they have all become the same.. I am wrong of course..

May bank holiday has moved this year to accommodate VE Day plus 75 next weekend.. Friday is VE day..

This email popped into my box yesterday from Didi Joslin..

‘Thoroughly enjoyed Chris Broad's contribution to your blog this morning and was very impressed by his culinary skills. I am sure the jockeys, trainers, agents whatever could produce a recipe each in order to publish a cook book with the profit going to the IJF. David Bass might even have his own chapter.

Didi.. I believe we actually did one some years ago.. I am sure it was sell out so probably hard to find a copy..David is thinking of reproducing his vegan menus.. it too will be a sell out?

Lockdown thoughts..

2019: Stay away from negative people… 2020: Stay away from positive people.

The world has turned upside down. Old folks are sneaking out of the house, and their kids are yelling at them to stay indoors!

You think it’s bad now? In 20 years our country will be run by people homeschooled by day drinkers…

This virus has done what no woman had been able to do…cancel all sports, shut down all bars, and keep men at home!!!

Do not call the police on suspicious people in your neighborhood! Those are your neighbors without makeup and hair extensions!

Since we can’t eat out, now’s the perfect time to eat better, get fit, and stay healthy. We’re quarantined! Who are we trying to impress?

On that happy note it is my turn to cook..

Have a great weekend and see you on Monday.

Talk cooking . Talk strong women..Mrs B has had another go at my receeding hairline while Mat has clipped off his beard.. Well done Evelyn.

Henry Kimbell is kindly taking up the mantle of the Kim Bailey Racing Community spirit..one day next week.
