13th February 2023

Plus 5 and dry when driving in.

It has been a week since my last blog posting and I am sorry to say that the opening line has not changed too much over the last week of guest blogs.. Dry!

Unbelievable that here we are in the middle of February and we have had no appreciable amount of rain for a month!

Global warming or just a strange winter. Either way it makes training and owning jumpers who want soft ground a nightmare..

This time last week I was worried about how some of the horses had been running, but all who ran over the last 7 days have run to form.

Does He Know ran a blinder in the Denman Chase at Newbury on Saturday. He finished a hugely creditable 3rd in a race that broke and set a new track record for the distance on the course....

Not that I was there but Newbury looked after DHK’s owners well and they had a thoroughly enjoyable days racing.

Where now with DHK. That will be interesting to see?

Up at Uttoxter Sayadam again ran well to finish 4th. It was by far the fastest ground he had run on and he will need to step up in trip if we run on good ground again..Poor chap was flat out all the way..

Yesterday it was Exeter and having given Mat a rather smart walking/going stick for Christmas he was able to use it for the first time.

Walking the course with David Bass the opinion was that his new stick did not go far enough into the ground to merit running El Rio. Annoying for his owners who most had made the trip to Devon in anticipation. But when in doubt pull out!.. Extroadinary to think that we won ER's race last year with Trelawne when it was unspeakably wet and heavy!

Espoir De Romay did run and for most of the race I was delighted but did he blow up? Either way he stopped too quickly after travelling into the straight like he would go close.

So back in the office this morning and at least I can see what is going on in the yard although I won’t be venturing too far from it yet. I am not  the most natural on crutches and negotiating the office chairs will be hard enough!! Not only that but I must keep my left leg up as much as possible??!

A nurse walks into a bank totally exhausted after an 18-hour shift. She grabs a deposit slip, pulls a rectal thermometer out of her purse, and tries to write with it.

When she realizes her mistake, she looks at the flabbergasted teller and, without missing a beat, says, “Well, that’s great…some asshole’s got my pen!

To finish .. Happy birthday to Andrew Bengough..
