Minus 2 and dry when driving in.
That really was a very frustrating weekend on the racing front..
Trelawne is a hugely talented horse, but has his quirks, and on Saturday at Wetherby he showed both sides to his character..
For the first time we decided that to win the race we had to be positive.. something David Bass is very good at.
Trelawne has never been asked to run from the front and there has always been a good reason for that after he hit the front over hurdles at Exeter and decided to try and join us in the paddock after the last..
Anyway moving on..Trelawne jumped off in front, but he was always racing slightly on the back burner looking where he was going, but passing the stable exit on the bend going away from the stands to the back straight, he thought about joining the owners and trainers car park..
How David managed to steer him back on course was a testament to his strength, but thankfully horse and jockey made it round the bend still in front!
Trelawne remained in front even after a slight deviation when turning for home and was joined by the eventual winner at the second last. The two battled it out to the line and we had to settle for second.. Annoying as we probably should have won a Grade 2, but we did not..
Time will show that was a good run.. we all know how much ability this chap has and now it is up to us to make sure that what happened on Saturday does not happen again!!..
Thankfully his owner breeder Sandra Steer-Fowler knows her horse and knows what he is capable of, in every sense of the word..
Killgarth is a case of a horse learning on the job while Sprucefrontiers pulled up quickly when going well…
At Kempton Brendas Asking ran to form to finish 4th
Chianti Classico ran a blinder to finish second..Yes frustration as he ran the best race of his life..
Perhaps we should blame Cornelius Lysaght for not being there on Saturday.. Cornelius, who is a great friend of CC’s owners Francis Brooke and Richard Pilkington has been there for both of CC’s chase wins, and as a result has been awarded the honour of being their lucky mascot!..
Harry Cobden has yet again failed to ride me a winner.. 90% of his rides for me have finished second!
HC is probably more likely to ring me up to ask me to spend a day walking round a field in Somerset with him than asking to ride one of my horses again?!
Finally at Warwick Two For Gold finished but down the field.
It was always going to be a tough ask off top weight for Two For Gold but hopefully now the handicapper will now relent and drop him a few lbs so he can get back to winning ways again.
Yes a tough weekend and still we are short of a 2024 winner!
Supper with James and Henrietta Cheatham and Mikey and Ginny Elliot.. Mikey's birthday next month so early celebrations..
Martyn and Sandra Steer-Fowler and Anita Dymond called in yesterday morning on their way home to Devon to see their boys and girl.. They had to wait for M&S tills to open before their could buy carrots..
Monday morning and a new week.. What will it bring on the weather front I wonder.. Promised cold weather might not be as bad as forecasted last week?
Look on the warmer side, you can avoid the chill by tuning in to watch the Australian Open Tennis..
Andy Murray is crrently playing as I type..
Today is known as Blue Monday which probably the reason for Peter and Moo Mordaunt leaving these shores to head to Sydney.. my sister will be meeting up with son Harry
To finish..
If you're depressed, try drinking a pint of water before going to bed.
It'll give you a reason to get up in the morning.
