Plus 13 and drizzling when driving in. A good drop of rain over night, 4mm

There are few better views of the Sussex countryside than from the top of the stands at Goodwood on a fine day, and yesterday the wind blew (sea breeze) with a clear sky.. It was stunning and busy. Excellent lunch with Keith and Liz Ellis and I mean the company and the food.. and the wine.

The down side was watching Shinobi failing to see out the extra trip at Stratford.. He looked all over the winner at 3 miles and although we hoped he would get the extra, he did not.

The best result of the day was seeing Newmarket’s most popular trainer Willie Jarvis win the Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes with Lady Bowthorpe … 27 years since he last won a Group 1 with Grand Lodge in St James’s Palace Stakes. Also good to see The Racing Post remember!

Willie Mullins continued his romp through Galway when winning the Galway Hurdle with Saldier and the first round of the new Racing League took place at Newcastle .. a resounding success..

We have one runner today at Bangor.. Grey Flint heads there and for my thoughts please click here.

I am heading to Wormsley cricket ground this afternoon to watch PCA England Legends play Paul Getty's X1 play

Chales Dingwall sent this over..

There is a very poor football joke about a match between the Butterflies and Many-Legged Insects -

in the first half the Butterflies were all over the opposition and six-nil up but in the second half the Many-Legged Insects brought on a substitute - a centipede - he was magnificent and ran rings around the Butterflies scoring eight goals and winning the match.

In the showers after the match the Butterflies manager asked why on earth he did not play in the first half “He was doing his boots up” was the reply! --
