My favourite story on the subject tells of old aristocrat lunching at Cheltenham in a box owned by one of the big race sponsors.
Oblivious to, bored, or probably both, by a discussion about current footwear modes, the aforementioned aristocrat was the subject of an attempt to include him in the conversation:
" I doubt that you have any trainers"?
To which in, waspishly dismissive and sardonic tone the aristocrat responded:
" Of course I do: Nicholls trains the jumpers, Stoutie the flat horses, and one of our tenants trains a couple of pointers, that his daughter rides most proficiently"
Remiss of me.. Happy birthday Fenella Tillier for yesterday..
